We aim to understand the accurate structure-function correlation of (photo)electrocatalysts. The specific energy conversion systems (e.g., water dissociation, CO(2) recycling and nitrogen fixation) and the associated energy inputs (e.g., solar, electricity or both) we concern are varied. These efforts, despite of the diversity of reaction systems, are all unified by one general framework: deciphering fundamental rules for the rational catalyst design from “seeing is believing”, to reveal the dynamic structure of catalyst in operando. Our ultimate goal is to achieve the durable production of desired products at a maximum turn-over rate (activity) without generating undesired byproducts. The implementation of this framework draws on our unique expertise in direct in-situ probing techniques, particularly our efforts on the liquid-phase atomic force microscopy (AFM) that resolves the structure dynamics of catalysts.
